Historic Awgu Camp to Shine Again as Enugu Embarks on Full Reconstruction – BBNaija 2025

Enugu State is making history once again. Governor Peter Mbah has announced a major overhaul of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu, the very first of its kind in Nigeria since the inception of the Scheme in 1973..

For decades, the Awgu camp has stood as a symbol of national unity, hosting young graduates from across the country as they begin their one-year journey of service. But like many old institutions, it has long needed a facelift. Now, Governor Mbah says his administration is committed to restoring the camp’s glory and giving Corps Members a more conducive environment to train, learn, and serve.

Speaking at the Government House in Enugu during a visit by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the Governor explained that the revamp of the camp is part of his broader development agenda. According to him, the Scheme’s contributions to education, healthcare, community development, and national integration cannot be overlooked. “The Awgu camp is not just a facility; it is a monument and a pride to Enugu State,” he said.

The Governor also praised the Federal Road Safety Corps for lending its Training School in Udi as a temporary orientation ground while renovations are underway, and assured continued collaboration with security agencies to safeguard Corps Members across the state.

In his response, General Nafiu applauded Enugu’s hospitality, noting that many Corps Members often choose to stay back in the state after their service year. He particularly commended Governor Mbah for increasing the monthly stipend for Corps Members to ₦20,000, describing the gesture as a morale booster.

The NYSC boss further highlighted the impact Corps Members continue to make in Enugu—ranging from rural healthcare and education to infrastructure and community development projects. He assured that the Scheme would keep deploying skilled manpower to support the state’s growth.

With the planned facelift, the Awgu camp is set to reclaim its pride of place in the NYSC history books, while also reminding Nigerians of the enduring spirit of service and unity that the Scheme was built upon.
