List of Items You Should Take to NYSC Camp [2025]

So, you’ve received your call-up letter for NYSC 2025 and reality is setting in, you’re going to camp! Excited? Nervous? Wondering if you really need that big leather box filled with “everything” you own? Well, take a deep breath because I’ve got you covered. Here’s a practical and no-stress guide to what you actually need to take to camp.

Must-Have Documents (Don’t Even Think of Showing Up Without These!)

These are your golden tickets into camp. Without them, security will kindly (or not-so-kindly) turn you back.

  • Call-Up Letter (Printed in coloured format)
  • NYSC Green Card (Signed and printed)
  • Statement of Result / Transcript
  • Degree or HND Certificate
  • School ID Card
  • Passport Photographs (Take at least 10 copies)
  • Photocopies of all documents (5 sets each recommended)

Pro Tip: Keep these in a waterproof folder. Campgrounds don’t care if it rains.

Toiletries & Hygiene Essentials

You’re going to be in a crowded camp environment—basic hygiene is non-negotiable.

  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Bath Soap & Sponge
  • Toilet Paper (take enough)
  • Detergent & Bar Soap
  • Towel
  • Sanitary Pads / Tampons
  • Disinfectant / Bleach
  • Bucket & Bailer (can buy at camp)
  • Shower Caps
  • Body Cream & Lotion
  • Clothing Essentials (NYSC White is the New Black)

Camp is basically a three-week fitness and discipline boot camp, so white is the dress code—every day.

  • White T-Shirts (At least 2 extra)
  • White Shorts (Add 2–3 extra pairs)
  • White Tennis Shoes (Preferably rubber – easy to clean!)
  • White Socks
  • Comfortable Underwear
  • Bedsheets
  • Flip-Flops / Rubber Slippers
  • Sleepwear
  • A few casual clothes (for Sunday wear & campfire night)
  • Combs, Hair Accessories, Modest Makeup (if you use)

Avoid colored underwear—they’re very visible under those white NYSC shorts.

Health & First Aid Kit (Better Safe Than Sorry)

While there’s a clinic on camp, it’s always wise to carry your own mini-kit.

  • Mosquito Net & Repellent
  • Painkillers & Malaria Pills
  • Band-Aids, Cotton Wool, Spirit
  • Anti-Diarrhea Pills (Flagyl, Tetracycline)
  • Robb Balm / Inhaler (if asthmatic)
  • Sanitary Gloves (optional)

Nobody wants to fall sick during camp. It’s hard to enjoy man o’ war obstacle courses with a fever.

Other Useful Items You’ll Thank Yourself For

  • Torchlight or Rechargeable Lamp
  • Waist Pouch (Your MVP in camp!)
  • Padlocks & Keys (theft happens)
  • Cloth Hangers & Pegs
  • Wristwatch (helps with strict schedules)
  • Food Flask, Spoon, Water Bottle, Cup
  • Face Towel / Handkerchief / Tissues
  • Extension Box or Power Bank

🔐 Make sure your box is theft-proof. Padlock everything!

For Your Sanity (Optional)

  • A Novel or Two (camp gets boring)
  • Notepad & Pen
  • Earphones / MP3 Player
  • Board/Card Games
  • Pillow (the camp ones are… not great)
  • Eye Mask & Earplugs (if you’re a light sleeper)
  • Camera or Phone with Storage

You’ll want to snap memories with your platoon fam. Just be discreet and very protective of your gadgets.

 MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

Bring as much as you can afford. Seriously.

  • You’ll need it for food, laundry, extra whites, drinks, snacks, etc.
  • POS and mobile banks work—but queues are insane.
  • Vendors in camp charge more, so get the essentials before going in.

Note: Mirrors and forks are not allowed in camp. Yes, you read that right.

Final Words from a Fellow (Former) ‘Otondoh’

Don’t let panic packing steal your peace. Pack light, pack smart, and remember, most things can be bought at camp (just at inflated prices).
