Outrage as Vigilante Operatives Assault NYSC Corps Member in Anambra State.
A shocking video has sparked outrage across the country after showing armed men, believed to be members of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, assaulting Corps Members in Anambra State..
In the disturbing footage, a female corps member, Jennifer Edema Elohor, was seen being viciously beaten, stripped, and left bloodied despite clearly identifying herself with her NYSC uniform and valid ID card. Her colleagues and eyewitnesses could be heard pleading with the operatives to stop the brutal attack, but their appeals were ignored.
The vigilante group accused the Corps Members of being internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys/girls” an allegation that has since been dismissed as baseless. The images of Elohor’s ordeal have triggered widespread condemnation from Nigerians on social media, with many calling for accountability and stronger protection for Corps Members serving in various communities.
Reacting swiftly, the Anambra State Government confirmed the arrest and detention of the operatives involved. Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, described the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable”. He further assured that disciplinary measures would be taken against those responsible and pledged that justice would not be delayed.
The NYSC scheme, which deploys young graduates nationwide for one year of compulsory service, has often faced concerns over the safety and welfare of Corps Members. This latest incident has renewed calls for better security measures to protect youths posted to volatile or poorly supervised communities.
